Marketing Ideas for Your Business

This may sound rather basic, but you can find lots of helpful marketing ideas on the Internet.

researching on her laptopSearch the Internet for online marketing and digital marketing, and also for the product or service that you offer on your website to find:

  • infographics, memes, articles, and lists
  • bulletin boards and forums, all discussing helpful ideas that may be used for improving your website.

The more you research, the more helpful information you will find. Often, you can find information that will spark ideas for a new advertising campaign, maybe a fresh outlook for the content about the product or service you offer, or a different application for your product or service, or find businesses to collaborate with for mutual benefit.

The main thing to remember is that you need to keep learning. You can’t expect the marketing ideas on the website that you built (or had built) five years ago to take care of you forever. Website maintenance – updating and adding new and interesting articles, checking for broken links, backing up your data files – that stuff is important. And you need to keep up with what is changing in your part of the business world, or you and your business get left behind. Remember Blockbuster video and game rentals? Now they have been eclipsed by Netflix.

Make it a habit to do a little marketing ideas research for your own benefit each day. Take notes of things you find interesting and each week, review your findings and decide which ones merit action and which ones are just good to know.

And the next time you socialize, either on the internet or “live and in person” you’ll also have some interesting information to share with your peers.

Is your small business website getting you the results you need? Do you get lots of website visitors, but very few people contacting you? Or do you get very few visitors to your website, and are baffled by your lack of visitors? Often Jax SEO Works can take a look at a website and make recommendations for several changes that could result in better responses from your website visitors. Make New Business Leads with Discussions, Questions and Answers

Take a look at LinkedIn Discussions and LinkedIn Answers; if you can contribute to a good discussion or help answer even one of the questions, your comment can also introduce you to new, potential customers.

If you are in small business, now is a good time to post your profile on LinkedIn (if you haven’t already).

Next, join a group in your industry on LinkedIn, then look at their current Discussions. If you can add to the discussion, it is a great way to network and meet new people, creating the opportunity for new business leads.

website links - like shaking handsAnd then take a look at LinkedIn Answers.  Like Jason Falls says in his recent article How To Drive Business Leads With Question & Answer Forums, “People are driving leads using Question and Answer forums like LinkedIn Answers, Yahoo! Answers and Answers.com. . . . In essence, the best practices (theirs and mine) remind you to be helpful first, don’t go in trumpeting your sales pitch and focus on long-term relationship building and benefits rather than seeing a sudden influx of leads because you clicked a button on a website. Nothing is that easy.  It’s like being at an off-line networking event.  You work at it a while and you get results.

And you can use the same principle at other open forums.

Get started by reviewing the questions. Find one that you are interested in and then do a little research, so that you can include some references in your response. (The answer that you provide with references will be much more impressive than sharing your best guess at the answer, and will make a better impression for you and your business.)

Reviews, Evaluations, and Testimonials

When consumers are looking to find a service or product, they often look for reviews, evaluations, and testimonials.

SearchingWhat kind of experience have others had with this business?  Are there many good reviews, or mostly complaints?

One way to share the positive evaluations of your business is by adding a page of testimonials or referrals on your business website.

Our family dentist, Dr. Ted Haeussner, has a great domain name for his new website – http://orangeparkdentist.com.  Ted has been our family dentist for almost 20 years, and keeps up with technical developments in the dental profession through his active involvement in a number of professional organizations.  Ted’s patient’s benefit because he is vigilant to provide the latest in dental care practices, procedures, and treatments for us.  Recently, I suggested he add a Testimonials page to his site, to allow his patients to share their stories.

What business couldn’t benefit from a positive review, evaluation, or testimonial?  As my wife, Yvonne, and I plan for our future, we appreciate the clear and strategic financial planning advice we have received from our financial advisor, Tom Trotta.  Sharing your knowledge and experiences with others is just a helpful thing to do.

In your evaluations, testimonials, and referrals, your website visitors are looking for

  • customer thoughts and hesitations,
  • a little personality,
  • and how the product or service improved the customer’s quality of life,

not hearing what a great product or service your business has, or a sales pitch.

You can also post your evaluations, testimonials, and referrals on your social media platforms, to continue to build trust and credibility, and encourage interaction with your customers.

It’s OK to mention your product or service from time to time, but remember that social media conversations should be mostly human interaction – helpful, interesting and/or fun.

A competitive business advantage.

What makes your business stand out from others that offer the same type of product or provide the same service?

customer-opinion-survey-formWe agree with Duct Tape Marketing; you can find the competitive advantage your business has by periodically asking your customers questions like these:

1. What made you decide to hire us/buy from us?

2. What’s one thing we do better than others with whom you do business?

3. Is there something we could do to create a better experience for you?

4. Will you refer us to others, and if so, why?

5. What words would you type into a search engine like Google to find a business like ours?

While it’s always good to hear complimentary answers like “Your company provides superior service.”, you’ll need to ask your customers for specific responses to have the information you need.

Start finding out what your customers think about your business; put questions like this onto a form and ask a few of your customers each month.  You can learn a lot from your customers.

Then you can focus your advertising on your competitive business advantage, and attract even more customers for what you do best!

Better Website Content

If you want people to visit your business website and find out about the products or services that your business provides, you need to have better website content.

Young lady adding content to her website, using her laptop.Better website content than who, you may ask? You need your website to have better website content that the websites of your competition; the other small businesses that you are competing with.

The text and images on your website will decide whether people stay on your website and find out about what you are providing, or “bounce” to another website to see if they find what they are looking for there.

Actually, the search engine robots mainly read the text on your website, they cannot actually read the images on your website. (Search engine robots can read the alternate text titles that you put on the images on your website, so be sure to add them to your images.)

Human visitors to your website can experience all that your website has to offer, the text, the images (and hopefully NOT those annoying popups that block visitors’ screens and they click to close as soon as they can).

For each page of your  website, select a good keyword phrase (a short phrase that you think people may use to search for the product, service, or topic of your web page).  Then be sure to use that short keyword phrase several times in the content on your web page. I say several times because once is not enough, but repeating your selected keyword page more than 3 or 4 times on a web page can be considered to be “keyword stuffing”, and can cause your website to be penalized by some search engines.

Search engine penalties can push your website much lower in search engine results, and sometimes cause your website to not be ranked at all in search results. And we all know that the higher your website ranks in search engine results, the more frequently website visitors we see the content of your website.

Your website content needs to be :

  • interesting
  • very significant to your website’s topic
  • easy to read and understand
  • periodically changed, updated, or refreshed

Are you giving your website visitors the content that brings people to your website, and keeps them coming back, or are you seeing most visitors come to your website and then bounce off to find what they were looking for, somewhere else?

Skilled Help Can Improve Your Website.

It’s OK to get skilled help to improve your website.

Few people excel in every website skill.  To make your website better, you can hire a multi-talented company, or (on a smaller budget) hire some freelance help as you can afford them.

freelance photographerFor example, a Google search for “hire freelance” will yield results for :

  • copy (content / text) writers, and even people to write and post blogs for your website
  • web designers
  • photographers
  • keyword research
  • getting more hyperlinks  to your website

To keep the search local, just add your city’s name in your search.

In addition to letting your friends know that you are looking for freelance help on LinkedIn and Facebook, two popular online sources for freelance workers are Elance, and oDesk.  Both provide information on a large selection of freelancers, their portfolios, earnings, and more.

Choosing an effective topic for your website.

Narrowing down the competition

When potential clients use search engines to look for information on websites, they will find more website listings (more results) when the clients look for general terms. For example, if they search Google for “doctors”, they will find many, many listings.  If they narrow their search, to look for doctors in New York City (i.e., searching for:   “doctors new york city”) they will find fewer doctors’ websites listed.  And if you are one of those doctors, your opportunity to gain a new client has just improved, because your competition has been reduced.

looking for Mercury head dimesMake your topic more specific to stand out on the web.

The same concept can work for you and your website if you pick a topic for your website that is more specific about the business or product or subject of your website.

For example:
Topics:

  • Coin
  • Pets

Refined Topics:

  • Mercury head dimes
  • Red Cocker Spaniel Puppies

With an effective topic for your website, you reduce the number of competing websites, and you improve your opportunity of gaining new clients.
